I've been thinking alot about friends and friendship recently.
I have never had many what I would call "good friends". In high school I hung around with a group of girls who were my friends and who I spent time with/talked to/organised stuff with but they were never people I could really rely on. I was always the one organising everything, making sure everyone was having a good time, listening to them when they were upset and I don't feel like I ever got back what I was giving. For example if I didn't organise something then no one would and no one would ask me to do anything. I felt like I always had to try harder, to make them like me almost. When I left to go to uni that was it we never saw each other again, we didn't fall out but no one bothered with me when I moved away or said they missed me or anything. Yes I could have made more of an effort but then they didn't make any effort at all and I knew it was just proof of what I had known deep down all along.
When I moved to Lancaster and started at Woolworths I met F so she is my longest standing friend here. We have had our ups and downs and I was a lame friend to her last year but I think I felt she had distanced herself from me over her first pregnancy. I don't think I understood how upset she was and how much it affected her however she didn't give up on me and we sorted things out and now hopefully are back to where we were before. She is a lovely genuine person but she has a partner too and now a baby so her priorities are obviously with them and I won't get to see her as much as I would like to.
I have my sister who always used to be my closest friend but since her illness I feel like I am walking on eggshells at times with her. Again I'm always trying to impress her, to be "cool" enough for her, to make sure she's having a good time. It's ridiculous she's my little sister yet somehow I feel like I have to try to get her to like me! She can be so sharp and critical and again it seems like whenever I see her it has to be on her terms. We did get on alot better and resolve some issues the last time I saw her which was great and she's told me to stop being like that and to just tell her to shut up when she's making me feel bad! I wish I could see her more as every 2-3 months isn't much at all.
Sometimes I don't feel like anyone knows me properly. I have never really trusted people and shared the real me. I know S knows me the most and still loves me (no mean feat!) but I am a private person and I like to resolve things myself in my head (although I like to have a good moan to people but in a joking manner). I supose I am quite cynical and I think that the only person you can truly rely on is yourself. Whenever I have called people my best friend it seems to highten your expectations so then when they let you down it makes it worse. I think you have to realise that other peoples priorities are always themselves, then their partners/children etc. If I take people like this then I am not disapointed.
I would like to have more friends though. Just people to do stuff with, with S or when he wants to work on the house or something then I have someone else to go shopping with or for a coffee etc. We sort of had D&P although now we don't spend anytime with them and I don't see how thats going to get any better as I feel angry/jealous of them, I hardly speak to L these days and we will have even less in common once the baby is born. I have spoken to a few people on line but it has never really materialised into much due to distance, effort? I don't know. The people S and I got on best with was J&D but of course they are the shadiest, must unreliable people who you could ever meet and we haven't seen them for years now. It was such a shame we used to have such a good laugh with them but they let S down again and again and they weren't friends in the slightest sense of the world. We just clicked though and we've not really met anyone like that since....
I am sort of friends with CF. It's weird because we are friends - we get on well, I trust him with things I've told him, I can talk to him about anything, I enjoy his company etc etc but it's difficult because he's a lad. If he was a girl I would have said ages ago do you want to go for a coffee/drink/shopping etc but somehow its different because he's not I just can't treat him in the same way. Its stupid, its not because either of us fancy each other or anything like that but it just seems wrong almost to ask him to do something. I don't know how S would feel about it either. I mean we could all go for a drink together but 3 is a funny number. I don't know... Jxx
